English translation of the last several paragraphs of Master Chu Yuh-Lung's letter:
The purpose of shuai chiao is not only to develop a person’s health, power, and beauty to the level art, but also to let people respect you. A person who achieves this level can truly be considered a kung fu master. And if you have truly achieved the highest level of kung fu there is no reason to boast of yourself and insist that others recognize you as a master. People will only respect true evidence of such. Yet some people prefer to use their imagination and fantasize that they are the world’s greatest kung fu masters, and at the same time publicly boast of themselves and denounce others.
My sifu, Chang Tung Sheng, told me “tien wai you tien, ren wai you ren” (beyond the sky we know there is always one higher, and beyond the people we know there is always one more skillful.” How modest he was!! It is truly unfortunate that there are a few of his students who believe they are so great. They shamelessly use his name yet claim to be his loyal students. How shameful they are!!
Chinese shuai chiao is different from judo and wrestling. Shuai chiao competitions that are held in the name of friendship have rules clearly stating that throwing is permitted but not deadly strikes. The objective is to remain standing while throwing your opponent by using opportunity, timing, angle, and power. No matter how badly you want to win, you should respect the rules and not attempt to hurt your opponent. As my teacher said, no matter how good you think you are there is always someone better than you. A competition is only a friendly test of skill, and employing Black Hand techniques merely demonstrates poor sportsmanship and a lack of moral character.
I hope that my observations and comments will encourage all members of Chang Family Shuai Chiao to unite in the promotion of shuai chiao worldwide.
